Doodles β Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Bernedoodles, and their many variations β have become one of the most popular breeds walking into grooming salons. Their unique coats require specific techniques and regular maintenance. Here's everything you need to know.
Doodle coats vary widely depending on their generation and genetics:
Always brush out the coat completely before bathing. Water tightens mats and makes them nearly impossible to remove. Use a line-brushing technique, working in small sections from the skin outward.
Use a quality shampoo and conditioner designed for curly or wavy coats. Dilute your shampoo for better distribution. Rinse thoroughly β product buildup leads to matting.
High-velocity drying is essential. Stretch the coat while drying to prevent curls from tightening into mats. This is also your opportunity to check for any remaining tangles.
Most doodle owners prefer a "teddy bear" look: rounded head, clean feet, and a body length of 1-2 inches. Use snap-on combs for body work and scissors for detail areas.
The biggest challenge with doodles is client expectations. Many owners don't realize how much maintenance these coats require. Take time to educate clients about brushing frequency (every 2-3 days) and recommended grooming schedules (every 4-6 weeks).
Doodles typically take 2-3 hours depending on size and coat condition. Price accordingly β don't undercharge for the extra time and skill required. Consider a matting surcharge for severely neglected coats.
